Did you ever watch the movie, The Replacements, with Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves? It’s a movie about a group of replacement football players called up to keep the NFL season going during a player strike.
I learned a big lesson from that movie that I am working to apply in my own business. In the movie, there is a scene where the group of replacement football players is talking about their fears. Keanu’s character mentions his fear of quicksand – not the actual quicksand but the feeling of being in quicksand while out on the football field where one thing would go wrong, then another, then another. At that point, he says, you start making decisions that get you deeper and deeper into your problem to where you cannot move. It’s like being in quicksand.
Many of the entrepreneurs who come to me are in this place. They have made so many bad choices on their own that they are in a place where they cannot move; they are stuck, like being in quicksand.
Another thing several of the replacement players mentioned in that scene was the fear that, after having a second chance to fix their past football failures, in the end, once the strike is over, they would be returning to the dead end jobs they had before.
We all have fears that drive us and the more choices we make without a little bit of advice or guidance from someone who is not sinking in that quicksand, the longer it will be before we find a solution to keep us from going under.
So before you go under in your business, before your money loss gets to the point you cannot catch up, ask yourself these 3 questions:
- Who do I know as a mentor who has recovered from the situation I find myself in?
- Who is a person whom I can trust with information about my current condition from whom I can get a little guidance before I go under?
- Am I really ready to make changes needed to fix the problem, to let my ego go and make choices needed that will get me back to making money again?
