Did you ever get into one of those matches with a friend that goes something like this: “Oh yeah? Well, see if you can beat this!” It becomes a contest to see who can do something just a little bit better than the other.
Last month while we were watching the Showtime documentary, The History of the Eagles, one of the stories was from Joe Walsh, about the recording of the song, “Hotel California.” He talked about the guitar “duel” at the end of the song between himself and Don Felder and how they would “one-up” each other with playing guitar.
Right now if you get the chance, go listen to the guitars in that song again. Those years of making music for the Eagles were so great. The rich vocal harmonies and the extra guitars really made them stand out.
Well, if you are building a business and you find that you need to create or play a game to help you become more creative, maybe you need something that gets you to move in a way you never moved before. As I said yesterday, I challenged myself to make a game out of meeting people at events. When I wanted to push my self to write more, I created a writing challenge to keep others working, with a goal to see who could write the most. And we’ll have another writing challenge coming soon.
But in the meantime, why not join with another friend right now in a way to hold each other accountable? Agree to challenge each other to do the same thing and then report back on your success. Maybe the winner buys dinner for the two of you to spice it up a bit more.
Nothing will spur you on more than winning something from a friend. Nothing was ever hurt by some friendly competition. And what will it cost if you lose? Oh, well. It’s a dinner, but you will still get to hang out with a friend who has the same goals of success in life you do.
So what is the challenge you are going to take on? It’s time to play this game. Write some games you play in the comments section and let’s give each other ideas.
