It’s time to tackle a business side of life where so many of us seem to be stuck in the same old, we’ve-always-done-it-this-way routine. I want to use this week’s topic to share with you all the ideas about how we need to throw out some of the old business models and get to changing things to make our life and business work for us.
Last week while at the marketing seminar in L.A. one statement was brought up that has made me think more about how I tell people about my business, not just this business but every job or business I have worked or been part of during the past 20 years. This is the scenario: Suppose U2 is going to play a big concert in your town. Now, can you imagine Bono coming to your networking event, passing out business cards and telling people one at a time, “Hi, I’m Bono and I play in this really cool band. We are going to be playing a show at the American Airlines Center here in Dallas next Tuesday night. Would you come to my show?” Obviously, he would never use that method to fill the American Airlines Center.
Well, in our business we have been told this is the way to network: you join a group and show up; you get a 30-second slot or maybe you are the spotlight person who gets 10 or 15 minutes. You stand in the front of the room and give this short speech that sounds so much like the made up one from Bono above.
Are you ready to get out of this mold in your business, in your life, in your relationships? Well it’s time to start doing things a different way. It’s time to stand out from the crowd, find new ways to interact with people who can put you in touch with the real people you want to meet that need or want your product or service.
I recently attended an event where I did not know anyone on the first day. By the end of the event I was one of the most popular people in the room. So many people were coming to meet me. I will share some of my secrets throughout the week.
This week I will be part of a great networking event here in the Dallas area. It’s called Dallas Chocolate, Blues, and Business. Check out the link and see if you want to come. If you are not in the Dallas area, check out the website for one close to you. If you would like a free entrance ticket, email me. I will send you one to get into the event free just for reading my post.
If you come see me at this event I will be offering discussion worksheets as a preview of our RockStar Life Workshop. You will have to be at the event to sign up for it and it will be on a first-come-first-serve. Come back each day this week to find out other ways that you can network like a RockStar and how you can be the stand out person at any networking event to get people to come to you.
If you want the chance to meet me in person and talk about what you are going through, to see what your next RockStar steps are, come visit my booth at the Chocolate, Blues, and Business event tomorrow (Tuesday, March 27th) in Dallas from 10 to 4. If you need a ticket, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org . I have some that I can email to you for print out that will get you into the event for free. Oh, and bring lots of business cards. Every time I go to one of these events I use about 400 to 500 business cards. I told you this is not your typical networking event! See you tomorrow.
