I was thinking of the old song by Bryan Adams, “Summer of ‘69.” The lyrics of the song talk about a man’s great summer memories, making me think back to one of my favorite summers. I read that the song was originally going to be called “The Best Years of Our Lives.”
While working on this week’s theme of getting back in sync, I started to think back to those summers that have the great memories for me. While my memories are not about the high school or summer band that I put together, I still had some fantastic summers in the mid to late ‘80s.
I recall the years ‘88 and ’89. Those were the first time someone planted the idea in my mind that I could own a business. I’m not talking just a lemonade stand business. I was working a part-time job and putting together plans on how to buy a service station or towing business.
One of the guys I worked with started talking about partnerships. We started our negotiations about who would do what, where we would raise the capital, etc. The total experience we had together in the service station industry was about two years between us.
Just like the song, I got that feeling we would never get far. Things just didn’t work out on that one. We were two people out of sync in getting our dreams off the ground. We both had dreams, but they were not the same.
As I look at partnerships in my life over the past 25 years, both business and personal, I have realized it takes two people in sync with the same vision to make a partnership work.
As I prepare for my radio show today, I am thinking of how each week I seek out guests who offer a message, who have the same goal of helping people reach their dreams. I work hard to have the show’s message in sync with the message my listeners need to hear, what they need to make their dream come true.
So look at the partnerships in your life and business. Are those you are partnered with in sync with the same vision and goals you have? The dream may have two parts, but the partners are in sync, they can reach the dream faster than if they worked on their dreams individually. If your partnerships are struggling, maybe that is another area you need to get in sync.
