As we close out this week of making changes to make history, I think back to the memorable movie of the ‘90s, Groundhog Day. It’s a Bill Murray classic, where Phil Connors repeats the same day until he gets it right.
I remember in the old days of VCR tapes from the video store, I watched this one more than once. It was probably the first movie I watched over and over. It was the first movie that I started to watch and use to learn something about myself.
We all look at that movie and can get caught up asking the questions: How many days did he repeat? What were the things he needed to change to make it stop? How long would you keep going if you had to repeat the same day over and over? How many times would you repeat the same mistake before learning from them?
You know that last one was a trick question. Earlier in the week I suggested (sarcastically) that Jennifer Lawrence could make a choice to never make a movie again so she could avoid the mistake of falling on the stairs to receive an award. Some people realized when reading that, bad choices get made after we fall because we’re afraid of repeating the same mistake.
Well, it’s time again for you to think. If you are failing, making the same mistakes over and over in your life, maybe it’s time to look at fixing them? For growth of any kind to happen you must get up, look inside to see what needs to be fixed, and make the change.
This week has been all about those who make changes and make history. They learn from the mistakes, take a different course (make a change) then act again. I talk about his when I share my self-help cycle about repeating the same mistakes.
It hit me years ago when someone told me the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Too many people are doing the same thing over and over, then pointing fingers at their boss, at their spouse, at their brothers or sisters, parents, etc., etc. They are looking to blame anyone or anything else rather than taking a look inside themselves.
While sitting in my favorite Starbucks today, I was in a conversation on and off with the young ladies sitting next to me. Shelby was talking to me about how she feels that she just cannot or will not ever get a boyfriend. She was a 20-year-old, beautiful young lady who is not able to believe she is worthy of a boyfriend.
I bring that up because as we talked, she named mistake after mistake she had made. Repeating the mistakes has driven the boys away. When both her friend and I pointed this out to her, it hit her hard.
She would repeat mistakes without realizing it. Rather than fix her belief in her mind, she let those boys reinforce the belief she has of not being worthy. Then she told herself it was the boys who were the problem, how all men are the same.
If I could put one thing into your mind to finish this week out, it would be this: you have to believe you can have a big impact in this world. You must make changes and believe those changes matter; taking action without the belief will only result in additional failures. Additional failures, without making changes, will then make your next actions those that only help you fail again.
It’s time for you to make changes that make history, just like Danica Patrick did. Plenty of men said she was just another woman trying to make it in a man’s sport. She beat the odds and changed history. Now it’s your turn.
