How many times have you started out with the full intention of getting the training you needed to become successful, only to fall short because you missed a class?
I was thinking how, when I was in high school, I thought it was fun to cut class. We wanted to do something fun that day and had that feeling like we really didn’t need to learn. After all, what was it going to hurt to take off just one day?
When I worked for a large automotive store and service center in the early 90s, I was asked the first day to show up for a training and orientation to learn about the company and how they ran things. But I was so smart I decided I didn’t need that; I just wanted to show up and do the work.
Since I only stayed with that company for a short six months, I never got to take advantage of things they offered: stock options, health benefits, or retirement programs. I missed out on the additional training I could have taken to learn more about the profession I was in, to learn more about the structure of the company and how I could have advanced my career at a young age.
In the past few years, I have started growing and attending many new educational events in addition to putting them on myself. I want to spend that extra time sitting in seminars, workshops, and monthly events like the very ones I lead. Why? I want to learn more and I’m willing to sacrifice to get there, even when it means – as it did today – riding in the rain on my motorcycle to get there.
Many people ask for help but never take those sacrifices like this. They won’t take two hours away from a job or task they need to do to learn a way to work smarter rather than harder. It’s almost like me back in high school thinking I didn’t need to learn that day; that learning wasn’t as important as something else I wanted to do. So what are you not willing to give up? And were could it be holding you back?
Take a look around to see the opportunities that you are missing that are right in front of you. What places could you go? What meeting could you have that will advance your business further in the next six months than you can take it by yourself over the next two years?
