That’s right. You heard me. I quit. As an entrepreneur I am working really hard to make changes in our world, to provide solutions to the real problems we are facing.
Too many people have quit supporting the rights and things that matter to me, yet they are still first to jump up and try to convince me that the rights they are fighting for matter to the world. Really they matter only to them.
We are a split country. We are so busy asking for laws and rules that will make others change to accept us, make others fight for our rights, while we take and take without giving back.
I am not gay, but I have supported my gay and lesbian friends. They want the right to be married and to live their lives the way my wife and I live ours. They want some of the simple things that we take for granted. Yet too many Christian preachers are so busy talking about the “sin” they forget we are all sinners and the Bible they preach from tells us that a little white lie is just as much a sin as murder.
I do not own a gun; I am not going to tell a man who does own one that he cannot. I stand behind the gun owner who exercises that right and responsibly owns a gun or multiple guns. We should all be allowed to own guns unless or until we commit a crime that shows we are not responsible with one. It’s not time to punish and take away rights from those who have repeatedly shown they can handle responsibility.
I have never had an abortion (obviously) or a wife or partner who had one. Yes, I personally feel it’s wrong. But I am not about to take away your right to have one. The laws allow you to have one if you wish. That makes it a choice for you.
I do not own animals. While I do not care to have pets, I am not going to harm one just because I don’t like it. I will support you in your efforts to give animals the best world possible, free from abuse.
I am a Christian and I support your right to be an atheist. I am not going to take that right away from you. I believe you are going to hell, and you have the right to believe there is no hell or heaven.
I am not a Republican or a Democrat, yet I am not going to sit and call them both stupid and twist the things they are trying to do. I am not going to repost your claims that one party or the other is involved in a conspiracy to overthrow our country. If you choose to live in that fear state, that is up to you. (There will be more on this one tomorrow.)
What I see is so many people asking us if we will join in the fight for certain rights or what they feel needs to be changed. But then they don’t want to fight for the rights that matter to other people.
I have watched many people who protest what they do not feel is right; they do what they can to change our world. Yet they miss the fact that others see it differently than they do.
I was in a conversation with someone about coexisting, how we all need to just get along. What I was surprised to see was this person wants us to get along, but only on their terms. They did not want to see or consider another side. They stood behind coexisting if the world came to their side – not if they had to put up with another view.
We live in a country that is almost evenly divided. So many have different beliefs. If we want to get along we must understand this point: let them do what they want, and we do what we want. The price of change is this: when you ask them to change one little thing, that creates change in other areas, which could change them as a person entirely.
It gets back to the real tragedy, which is that we refuse to change the person in the mirror, but ask others to change for us. It will all come down to this: if you want to change your world, you will have to make some changes in your life.
The power of the entrepreneur is they learn from failures. The successful ones look in the mirror and fix the problems there, before asking you to fix your problems. A well-known Bible parable talks about removing the plank of wood from your own eye before you try to remove the splinter from the eye of another.
So I quit. I quit asking you to change; I am going to the mirror to start with the change there. Just like Michael Jackson shared with us in his ‘80s hit song, “Are you going to make that change?”
