If you grew up in the country or near a farm, you will relate to this story. It is always an older kid telling the younger kid, “Go ahead and grab it. Nothing will happen.”
If you have ever been that younger kid, you know the next thing you do is grab the fence. The electric shock you feel does only one thing to you: it makes your hand curl tighter around the fence. While the older kid who just dared is yelling, “Let go!” you just can’t uncurl your fingers and let it go.
When I talk to people about taking action and getting off the fence, their seeming inability is exactly like grabbing that electric fence. That’s what their uncertainty is doing to them – keeping them stuck on the fence. We all know that life is going to be better if you do not have that many volts running through your body. We know the voltage is low enough it won’t kill you, but strong enough to keep you holding on longer.
If you have not taken action after reading this blog or the many books that I recommend, you are holding onto that fence. And we all know that if you want change, you are going to have to let go and make a change.
If you want that buzzing feeling to stop and a better world to come into place, you are going to have to get off the fence. It’s shocking you.
I was thinking of the many times I ride I-10 across Texas into New Mexico. The site you see as you are coming out of El Paso is the border fence between the United States and Mexico. The site of that wall marks a dividing place between extreme poverty on one side and middle class living on the other.
When I push you to take action, that is where you are most of the time – poised between the status quo and great benefits. By choosing the right side of the fence, you can raise your life and lifestyle many levels. But when you hold the fence trying to decide which side to land on, it’s just like holding that farmer’s electric fence. It has you locked in place. Even with someone yelling at you saying, “LET GO,” you are frozen in place.
It’s time to let go of the fence and land on the side of action where a better business and a better lifestyle wait for you. Drop that “wantrepreneur” mindset, replace it with an “I get it” attitude and take action. Become an entrepreneur who people look up to. Before long you will be the leader and everyone will be asking, “How did you do it?” Then you get to say, “I let go and now I’m living.”
