Wish you were a Cleveland fan today?
For the first time in my life I heard myself say, “I wish I were in Cleveland today.” For them this is going to be one of the sweetest days of joy. Many of those who live there are getting up this morning, some hungover, some just ready to tackle the day.
While I was sitting having my morning coffee, I thought about what those fans’ day would be like. Some are looking to find out what time the plane arrives with their NBA Champion team on it. What time would the Cleveland Cavaliers arrive? Could I get in to be part of the party when the doors open, and Lebron James walks out the door holding that trophy?
It’s the first NBA championship for that city. Over the years I have not been the biggest sports fan, but I’ve lived in cities where championships happen. I was here in Dallas in 1999 when the Stars won the Stanley Cup; I was here in 2011 when the Mavericks won the NBA championship for the first time. I must say those celebrations are great, and to see what those teams do for the fans is awesome.
So when it comes to business, do you have fans that are excited? Have you created “Raving Fans”? Think about those Cavalier fans. For years they have been wearing the jerseys, the hats, buying the swag that shows they are team fans. It made me think what am I doing to create raving fans.
So I decided to share four ways to help you create those “raving fans,” the ones who will tell everyone about your business, through the good and the bad.
Get to know those who support and follow your business.
Know their hobbies, what gets them excited. Know what they are fans of. Find ways to put that in the way that you help them.
Know what matters to them. Do you know what your customers’ top priorities are? Do you know what pet peeves they have? These things matter to them and you better know it.
Know about their families. Do you know if your customers have kids? Do you know about their spouses? Would you know if they had a spouse, or child in the hospital with a major illness? Knowing a family and the ups and downs of their family life would make a huge difference.
Make some promises and work your butt off to keep your commitments.
Lebron James made a promise to the city of Cleveland when he came back; he said it was time for him to bring a championship to his hometown. That takes some guts to promise, and he worked to make it happen. After last year’s loss he got back in the game and went to make it happen this year.
When working with coaches and speakers as I do, I hear so many times of the speaker or coach who sold some product, service or package, but did not follow through on what they sold. So if you want to make a big fan, go ahead and make a big promise, BUT be prepared to do whatever it takes to keep that promise.
Connect with your customers, fans, and list personally.
If you ever watch Lebron off court, this man does what he can to make everyone he comes close to feel special. You have to make those around you feel special. One of the ways to do this is to create your products and services to feel to the customer like it was made specially for them.
Do some extra things that the stars would do. When someone asks to take a picture with you, jump at that the opportunity. If they ask you to take the picture jump to do that as well.
Become social with your fans. If they make a comment on your blog or Facebook pages, then comment back. Show them they matter to you. Every now and then pick someone in your fan base and do a random shout out on social media. Tell the world why they should check out their business.
Lastly always give them more than they paid for.
Give extra bonuses. I like to add things and include my customers. When I recently added a new part to one of my programs, I sent out an email to my existing customers and said, “Hey, this is a new part to my program. Here is a link to get that part for FREE.” I am always looking to add a bonus to what I give them, and most of the time it’s AFTER the sale has been completed. So giving it to them is not a pitch to ask for more money; it’s a way of saying, “Thank you for your business.”
Some other extras you might want to consider: give them a personal phone call to ask, “How is it going? I was thinking about you.” If they are having a celebration, do whatever you can to be at that event. Join them in the celebration, especially if you had a part in them achieving it.
In a world of content creation, the idea of serve them with content, sell them content is not enough anymore. I have been saying this for over a year now: “It’s the experience that matters.” You have to create an experience they can only get with you.
That is how both the city of Cleveland, as well as the team members of the Cleveland Cavaliers feel today about Lebron James. It’s an experience going to the finals and winning the championship with him.
