I read an article this morning that talked about a student who is overwhelmed with his student debt. He is thankful for the privilege to attend school, but wonders what his education will get him when he is done with school.
The biggest thing that keeps him going is the fact that so many of his friends and fellow students have dropped out. They have jobs from the fast food to service industries – places he doesn’t wish to go.
In America today, we are being misled about many things. We are told that student loans and grants are needed to afford the high cost of education. Kids are being told that having that big name school diploma is what will help them stand out from other students to get the jobs. Some believe that if you quit school you will only end up with a job at your local fast food joint for life.
If you’ve read many of my blogs, you know I am one to tell you that there are many great people who did not have that education and yet we know and use the products they created after they dropped out of college or high school. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Richard Branson all dropped out of school. They went on to great things. But they have something most don’t: they had determination; they had big dreams and took big risks to get them.
The truth is the schooling will not guarantee you a job; the Ivy League school will not set you apart. The difference maker is you having that dream and taking action. No matter the education, the background will get it for you.
I will tell you one thing that is guaranteed: school loans can burden your life and will not go away on their own. You will have to pay them back; you will have that stick with you until it’s gone. So it’s time to take your big idea and start looking for ways to open doors, with or without the education.
That education is a ticket that can give you a leg up, but if all you’re going to do is get the education and expect a free ride, well your big idea will be just as good as that pipe dream you had when you were five years old. You are the person who will make the choices that will take you up to places like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerburg. Start now looking for those places that will open the doors for you. Start now working in places that move you in the direction you want to go. Don’t count on buying your way by financing your future with large amounts of debt, with no action plan behind it.
