It’s time to do something interesting that keeps me moving and growing. I was watching videos on YouTube, seeking to identify places that are in need of growth or more learning when suddenly the suggested video on the side showed one from Richard Branson, the billionaire who created what is now one of world’s Top 20 brands. It gave me an idea for this week’s theme. “What I don’t have in common with [insert person’s name here] that I need to work on.”
I know everyone could give you a list of things I don’t have in common with these people. I will mention a few, but share with you the main area of growth they have that I do not, an area needed in life and business to succeed. I wanted to start out this week with Richard Branson.
Richard Branson has a huge company, brand, billions of dollars – that list could go on and on. Over the years I am sure many times he has come short of success and did things that made him for a second wonder, “Am I going to make it through this?”
In the one video I watched, he told the story of being greeted at his front door by his banker telling him the money that had been loaned to him was being recalled. What Richard did that I need to do more of is this: he spent that weekend making calls that led him to money to borrow to pull him through until he could find another banker.
I need to have many companies and not keep them all under one corporation; I need to get people running those companies like Richard does so one company does not carry all the burdens, thus making room for growth in my business. But this one thing I need to learn to do more: I need to pick up the phone more and look for the back-up plan.
I know many coaches and entrepreneurs come to me looking for the answer for the struggles and issues they are facing. I still do not apply myself enough in my own business under these circumstances and need to work on that more: I need to build stronger relationships with my contacts and reach out to grow more connections.
If Richard Branson had not built those relationships, and been humble enough to pick up the phone and reach out, that part of his business would just be a story as a few of mine are.
So today the challenge is this: who do you need to strengthen relationships with? What new connections do you have to make to build your business and life better? Let’s make a list and start today.
